SCA Wins Gold

Students at SCA are busy playing basketball at school and getting ready for badminton season. Not to be over-shadowed are the stu-dents in our school who recently com-peted at the Alberta Winter Games in Cold Lake, AB. A quick look at the results page on the host's website shows a strong showing for many SCA athletes.
Six SCA athletes came home from the Games with a medal. Isaac Hansen led the charge finishing with a silver in the U-16 Men's Foil and another silver in the Mixed team event. Isaac credits his suc-cess to the strong team atmosphere he felt at the Games. "We were there with all of our friends that we train with so it felt really comfortable." Isaac is looking forward to competing in the next Winter Games as his main competition will be moving up to the next age category.
Other athletes to medal at the Games were Dylan Baxendall, a gr. 7 student at SCA, who grabbed bronze in the boys snowboard cross, Stephanie Kostick, an-other 7th grader, grabbed silver in the Fe-male Dual Giant Slalom, Kenton Masche-meyer took home bronze in the U-16 boys curling, and Emily Majaesic was part of the bronze winning synchronized swimming team.
Athletic Director Ryan Reed is proud of the students achievements. "So often the only athletes recognized at our school are those who play team sports" stated Reed. "Students like Stephanie Kostick, Dylan Baxendall, Danielle Wal-lish, etc...we get to see their athleticism everyday in Phys Ed class but their peers and others in the SCA community don't get to witness their achieve-ments. We don't want these to go un-noticed."
With the recent exposure that the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver have provided for such sports as Curling, Skiing, Speed Skating, and Snowboarding, some of these young athletes may be gunning for their own Olympic moment. Maybe one of these young stars will be stand-ing on a podium in 2018 with their own Olympic moment
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Winter Games! Way to make the SCA family proud.
